Our Process

At D. Williams Builders, we are committed to enriching the lives of Southern Tasmanians through expert craftsmanship and deep connection.

Whether it’s maintenance work on your home or a more complex renovation, our structured process ensures clarity, quality, and peace of mind from day one.

  • Start by filling out our New Enquiry Form. This helps us better understand your specific needs in tailoring the scope of works for your project.

  • Next, book your 30-minute call with our Managing Director. It’s a chance to talk through your project ideas, goals, and what matters most to you.

  • If we are the right builder to assist with your project, we will schedule a site visit to see the space firsthand and gather the details we need to move forward with confidence.

If there is a more suitable builder/contractor to assist with your specific requirements. Then we will recommend and connect you with them directly.

  • We will prepare a tailored proposal for you depending on the scope of works.

For works categorised as low risk in both building and plumbing, we prepare a tailored proposal for you.

For works categorised as medium risk or above in either building, plumbing or both we will prepare a preliminary agreement to assist you with preparing the plans and documentation required for the preparation of an accurate proposal.

For Medium risk and above if you already have these plans available then we will jump straight to the detailed proposal.

  • We meet in person to walk through your proposal. It’s an opportunity to ask questions, make adjustments, and ensure the plan aligns with your expectations.

  • Once you’re happy with the proposal, we then prepare a standard form Master Builders contract for all works over $10,000.

  • Once the contract is signed and the deposit is paid, we then schedule your construction start date and keep you informed every step of the way.

For our multi-day jobs, the first day onsite our team will meet with you to introduce our lead carpenter, project manager etc and discuss the project before starting works.

With your permission we also take pre-start photos to document the exciting transformation to your space.

  • On larger projects, we hold regular site meetings to ensure everything is progressing smoothly and you are kept updated on the anticipated schedule ahead.

  • At practical completion we’ll go over the completed work together, ensure everything meets your expectations, and address any remaining details or questions.

This is the last meeting of the project before our final handover and photos.

  • This is our final get-together with you on-site, and it’s all about celebrating the finished project together.

The work is complete and the space is ready to enjoy. We will meet with our photographer onsite to capture the finished result.

  • Following the completion of works we will reach out to check in with how the works are holding up.

Questions

  • Even small jobs benefit from clear communication. The enquiry call helps us quickly understand your needs, confirm the job is a good fit, and give you the right advice from the start.

It also ensures we gather the right details so we can quote accurately and leave no room for ambiguity. It helps us understand if we are the right builder to assist with the project, or recommend someone better suited.

It also gives us a chance to understand your priorities, identify the category of work involved, and determine whether building or plumbing works may be notifiable or require permits. If a planning determination or planning permit is likely, we can talk about this early.

Ultimately, this conversation ensures we make the best use of your time when we meet on site.

  • We meet face-to-face to walk you through the scope of works, answer questions, and make sure everything aligns with your expectations before moving forward.

It’s especially important when quoting without detailed plans. In those cases, we don’t have an objective reference for the final result. Meeting in person allows us to explain what’s included and excluded, clarify the intended outcome, and ensure we’re both on the same page.

It’s also an opportunity to confirm we’ve captured everything discussed onsite, so we are working together every step of the way.

  • We offer these steps free of charge because they’re essential to delivering the right result for you. It helps us give you an accurate quote and ensures you have all the information to make a confident decision. The quote itself is also free – our goal is to make the process streamlined, clear, and risk-free.

  • Knowing your budget helps us tailor our advice and options to what’s important for you.

It means we won’t waste your time designing or quoting something that doesn’t suit. It’s not about pushing your limit – it’s about giving you the best result for what you’re wanting to invest in your project. Sharing your budget helps us have open and honest conversations from day one. It gives us a starting point to align expectations, show what similar projects have cost recently, and design something that fits your goals.

If your required budget and scope don’t align, we can discuss this early and recommend someone more suitable – saving you time and helping you move forward with confidence.

  • We’ve designed our process to reduce the stress and surprises that often come with building projects.

Rather than rushing to quote, we take the time to ask the right questions, clarify expectations, and walk through the scope with you.

This helps us avoid missed details, unrealistic pricing, and miscommunication. It also gives us the opportunity to identify whether any plans, reports, or engineering are needed for accurate preparation of quotes.

By following a structured process, we’re able to deliver smoother projects and better outcomes for everyone involved.

D. Williams Builders celebrate 170 years of building with Southern Tasmanians and welcome the opportunity to assist your next building project.
