Mount Stuart Project

At D. Williams Builders, we don’t just restore—we respect, rework and rebuild with purpose. This North Hobart verandah project is a perfect example of how our team blends heritage charm with enduring craftsmanship to create spaces that honour the past and hold strong into the future.

Our client came to us with a clear goal—modernise the kitchen and bathroom, open up the layout, and sort out a few underlying issues that had been quietly frustrating for years. It wasn’t about adding space. It was about making the existing home function better, feel more connected, and support their lifestyle well into the future.

For us, that’s what good building is all about: solving problems with care, skill, and long-term thinking.

What We Delivered

This project brought together many elements of our craft, from careful demolition and reframing to tailored joinery, electrical upgrades, and detailed finishing. The heart of the transformation included:

  • Structural Fixes Where It Counts

Beneath the surface, this house needed some attention. We rebuilt the bathroom floor from the joists up—correcting a 40mm slope and removing the bounce caused by ageing, under-supported timber. It’s now solid, level, and ready for decades of daily use.

  • A Kitchen Built for the Everyday

Partnering with Mint Joinery, we delivered a kitchen that’s beautifully crafted and deeply practical. From smart storage solutions to tech-integrated features, every detail was tailored to how our clients move, cook, and live. This wasn’t just cabinetry—it was a custom-fit solution that made their everyday simpler and more enjoyable. Custom height benchtops, storage, and appliance locations were all designed to suit our clients’ needs.

  • Open Plan Living That Flows

We removed internal walls, restructured the layout, and re-sheeted the ceilings to create a light, open space where the kitchen, dining, and living areas now work as one. It’s a quieter, calmer home with space to move and breathe—complete with long storage shelving for the everyday bits and pieces that typically clutter your island bench.

  • Details That Make a Difference

From joinery like the low-height shelf along the fireplace wall to adjusted switch heights and insulation upgrades, we approached every element with intention. It’s these small, thoughtful choices that elevate the whole home and make such a difference to the clients everyday lives.

  • Exterior Touch-Ups Done Right

We replaced damaged fascia boards, installed new gutters and downpipes to the extension, and repainted to ensure a polished, weather-ready finish that complements the upgrades inside.

Challenges & Craftsmanship

Homes with history often carry hidden stories—and this one was no different. This house's floors were 40mm out of level from external to internal wall, and the uneven ceilings required re-levelling in the living areas. It demanded real attention to detail and problem-solving on the fly.

Our team carefully installed new bearers, sistered joists, and re-battened the ceilings to bring everything back to level—respecting the original bones of the house while reinforcing it for the future. It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes work we take pride in: quiet craftsmanship that lays a solid foundation for the years ahead.

This project was a reminder of why we do what we do. Because the job isn’t just to build—it’s to care for what already exists, and make it better.

The Result

The home feels calmer. Lighter. Easier to move through. The kitchen is now a central hub—tailored to the people who use it. The bathroom is safe and solid. And every corner of the house now works harder to support real life.

No wasted space. No unnecessary fuss. Just smart, quality-driven building that stands the test of time for our client to enjoy for years to come.

Why It Matters

At D. Williams Builders, our purpose is simple: to enrich lives through quality construction. We honour the character of what’s already there, while shaping spaces that work better for the people living in them—today and into the future.

This project reflects that mission completely. Every change was deliberate, every detail carefully crafted to make daily life easier, more comfortable, and more connected for our clients. We couldn’t be more proud of the outcome.
